    Bravo 1 vs Bravo 1 X Lower

Is there any difference between a B1 and an B1 X Lower?

I think there is quite a bit different.
X has low water pickup on nose cone. I think the shaft size or bearings are larger on x also. X is rated for more hp.
I may have missed something or be off a bit.
I have only had alphas and my current x.

So i guess it depends on the serial #. I was wrong if the serial # is newer, i think. Looks like the difference is mainly in the upper.
Heres what i found googling it a little.

The X should have larger shaft. IIRC it is 1 1/4" vs 1" to hold up when behind a 525.

See i thought I'd heard something like that too.
But i thought an x could only handle like 425 hp if u really drove it hard. I heard if u baby it they should handle 550-600.
Personally i think id want an xr if i had more than the 425 hp that i have. Just for a little more peace of mind, but i guess i might run it and just expect it to blow at some time.

Well, I got curious so over lunch looked up some part numbers. The B1 and B1 X lowers are the same. Same part numbers, same parts inside (including gears). The difference is in the Uppers. There are some differences there.

So are the lower housings the same too?
I guess i just hadn't seen many with the low water pickup and assumed it was an x thing.
Did you reseach show them always being the same or is it just the later model bravo's that are the same as the x on the lower.
That other post i had that was a screen shot in post 3, was off the net somewhere......so it couldn't be wrong could it??

I looked up parts that are for the "later" style lowers with the oil tube. Specifically those that start with the 0M serial numbers. I believe that there is a later group of serial numbers that I did not check. I am assuming that these are the "Sweptback" drives. There are also two earlier groups of Bravo serial numbers. I am sure that the B1 and B1X lowers are identical for the 0M drives. The XR is only different in the prop shaft assembly (shaft, carrier, bearings and gears). All other components are the same (gear case, vertical driveshaft etc.).

The gear case is available in side water pickup, low water pickup and dual water pickup on any Bravo drive (they all share the same case). Low water only does appear to be a pretty rare bird. I guess the only time you would want that is if you are running very shallow prop shaft depths where the side intakes may be out of the water. That would be a surface piercing application on the prop though and from what I have read Bravos don't like that too much.

Merc has a good parts finder if you want to look this up but I have found that perfprotech.com is a much easier site to get access to the parts fiche if you want to check out earlier or later models.

Cool!! Thanks for all the info!!
See you're helpin me learn here too!!

Huh, didn't realize that there were 3 options in the lower case.
    Mine has dual pick up.
Its fun running on muffs. Have to gorilla tape the low water pickup or drop it in a tub of water.
I hate muffing it at all, but got to test stuff and winterize somehow!

You can't hang around Dan without learning.

A fresh water flush kit eliminates muffs and tape.
