23 Outlaw - Hit rocks - Prop damaged

    Hello everyone,

Me being the "nice guy" in a no wake zone, running closer to the edge of a narrow channel than I prefer to give a HUGE Alpha Cat yacht the right of way......the outdrive drug up on a rock pile. Here is a link to said boat LINK. She's a beauty, but cost me $$$.

Broke the tip off the skeg, scared it up good, and chewed up the edges of the Mirage 23P. I will update with a picture soon, and will have the skeg fixed locally, not that it would affect performance at all. Purely cosmetic.

That being said, I was already in "upgrade prop" mode before the loss for reasons listed below.

    • Prop blowout at slow speeds, excessive slip
    • Sometimes, the boat will not plane due to prop slip (hit rev limiter before boat will plane). Normally occurs trying to plane immediately after coming off plane.
    • Slips when cornering
    • Willing to sacrifice top end speed for better planing, improved midrange, better overall performance

Looks like I am in the market for a performing 4 blade, and need the help of all the gurus here.

The rocks are located in a place you guys would likely never have to worry about.

See the small inlet into Bayou Grande? Right side

The rocks come out into the channel. The sign, off to the left, is in the wrong place. There should be a bouy marker at the tip of the rock line. You can't see nor read that sign coming into the Bayou. You hit rocks before you'd ever see that sign.

Less pitch in a 4 blade to compensate for the extra blade? I read the Bravo 1 props run less pitch than advertised.

I read about this secret grind. Why hasn't anyone kept using it?

I won't ever be so kind next time.

With the 23OL, you may can pull the higher pitch. I run a 24p B1 and only turn about 4600 rpm max. The 23 M+ I could spin a little higher. The Rev 4 is a real heavy prop. I could only turn the 23p to 4400 rpm. I would like to try a Rev 4 in a 21p and a B1 in a 22p but I imagine the 23OL is a lighter and faster boat than our 252.

    Ouch.

Sorry about that. But as you said, you were in prop upgrade mode, sucks this is why you have to upgrade. This kinda stuff is wild to see. Makes me wanna stick to the muddy channels and lakes I have close by.

Highly considered this, but reviews are good/bad depending on where you read them.

I personally had one on my last Baja. No bad reviews here. In fact I liked it. I hit a couple rocks with it and no problems. I did a full on test with and without it. Lost ZERO speed, no adverse affects. Added more "bling" to the drive when on the trailer also. I'd Post a pic of it but I see Photobucket is now charging to post photos.

Here is the only pic I can find of it here on PBN. You think you hit a rock. Look at that prop! Didn't hurt the guard at all

Purchased a Bravo 1 24P and took the Mirage+ 23P to the shop for repair. Should only be a light touch up on that prop. Damage was only on the very edges.

Will try the boat with the Bravo and have it labbed for the best compromise of planning, midrange, and top end speed.

Installed it on the boat today, but have to wait until next weekend to try it out. Wife is sick, so boating wasn't an option for us this weekend.

Bravo 1 24P performs overall so much better than the Mirage 23P. The boat panes faster and easier, handles better, corners better, less bow rise, better cruise speed, and only had to sacrifice 2-3 mph. Can only turn it to 4,600 with a full tank of fuel and all gear loaded. If I had it tweaked to get more rpm, I bet that speed would return and still have the benefits of the Bravo. No more blow outs trying to get on plane or while cornering.

Sounds like what I need but I don't think I have enough motor for a 24p. Going to look at a 22p for mine like Dan had mentioned.
